Understanding ADHD
Through Self-Awareness and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
ADHD is often spoken about in terms of what is “wrong” — the distraction, the forgetfulness, the restlessness. But there is so much MORE to it than that.
When we take the time to truly understand how ADHD shows up in YOU, as an individual, it opens the door to managing it — NOT with pressure, but with self-awareness, gentle understanding, and even a celebration of YOUR unique brain.
What Is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation.
But it doesn’t look the same for everyone.
For some, it is a mind that jumps quickly from one idea to the next. For others, it is a constant battle to focus or stay organised. Often, there is a feeling of being overwhelmed, of trying to do too much or not knowing where to start.
It can be a MIX of these experiences — or something entirely different — because ADHD shows up uniquely for everyone.
Underneath it all, many people with ADHD carry feelings of:
• Shame
• Frustration
• Or simply not feeling “good enough”
These often come from years of trying to fit in, struggling with social expectations, feeling different without knowing why or not understanding why things feel harder.
Why Self-Awareness Is Key
Understanding how ADHD specifically shows up for you is the first step toward lasting change.
When you begin to recognise your patterns — what triggers stress, what grounds you, and what helps you focus or stay on track — you start to feel more in control.
You begin to work WITH your brain, not AGAINST it, and learn to MANAGE your energy instead of FIGHTING your mind.
For example:
You notice music helps you focus ➝ so you pop on headphones while you study.
Long tasks feel overwhelming ➝ so you break them into smaller steps with micro wins/goals.
You lose track of time easily ➝ so you use timers or alarms to stay on track without pressure.
Messy spaces stress you out ➝ so you clear a small area and make it feel calm.
Too much talking drains your energy ➝ so you take quiet time after school or social events.
Big deadlines cause shutdown ➝ so you start earlier and check in with someone for support.
Ideas come fast at night ➝ so you keep a notebook by your bed to jot things down.
Your Brain Isn’t Broken — It’s Brilliant
Let’s be clear: Having ADHD does NOT mean you are flawed.
In fact, many people with ADHD are:
✨ Creative ✨ Intuitive ✨ Empathetic ✨ Full of ideas ✨ Energetic ✨ Passionate ✨ Quick-thinking ✨ Deeply reflective ✨ Outside-the-box thinkers ✨ Emotionally aware ✨ Hyper-focused (on things they love!) ✨ Adaptable ✨ Great in a crisis ✨ Playful and fun ✨ Strong sense of justice ✨ Problem-solvers ✨ Visionary
The challenge is often learning to calm the Nervous System and finding ways to feel ANCHORED when things get chaotic.
When you Reduce Anxiety, Regulate your Emotions, and Focus on What is already Working, everything begins to shift.
You start to:
• Respond rather than react
• Recognise your strengths
• Celebrate your uniqueness
• And most importantly—be kind to yourself
Living From the Rational Mind
Your brain has two main modes:
• The Primitive Mind – activated by stress, triggers fight/flight/freeze
• The Rational Mind – calm, logical, creative, and confident
ADHD can make it easier to slip into the Primitive Mind—especially when overstimulated or overwhelmed.
