School and Exam Anxiety
- Perhaps your child complains of stomach aches or headaches every school morning.
- Perhaps they revise for hours, then go completely blank in the exam.
- Perhaps getting them through the school gate has become a daily battle.
Your child is not being difficult and they are not failing.
Their brain has moved into protection mode, and it can learn to feel safe again.
Understanding what’s happening in their brain
When anxiety builds, a young person’s survival brain sees school or exams as a threat. It responds the only way it knows how, with fight, flight or freeze.
That might look like:
- Stomach aches, headaches or feeling sick
- Trouble sleeping, especially before school or exams
- Tears, anger or emotional outbursts
- Panic, or a strong reluctance to go into school
- Going blank under pressure
In an exam, the survival brain can take over so quickly that the thinking brain, the part that holds everything they have revised, struggles to get a word in. They haven’t forgotten. Their brain is simply busy keeping them safe.
Every worry adds to their stress bucket, and it often builds gradually over time. When the bucket is full, even small things can feel overwhelming.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help
Using a gentle, brain-led approach, I help young people understand their own anxiety, so it feels less frightening and more manageable.
Together we build emotional regulation, confidence and a stronger sense of safety and choice. Each session ends with relaxing hypnosis to help empty the stress bucket and calm the nervous system.
It can help with:
- School anxiety and reluctance to attend
- Exam stress, including GCSEs, A levels and mocks
- Going blank or panicking under pressure
- Worry about friendships, tests or presentations
- Sleep difficulties linked to school stress
- Low confidence and self-belief
For young people
If you are reading this yourself: feeling anxious about school doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. Your brain is trying to protect you; it is just working a little too hard. You can learn to calm it down, and it is easier than you might think.
